Oregon Berry Season

Oregon Berry Season has Arrived

We love our Berries!!  Any one of them could be called our favorite!  There is nothing quite as delicious as a berry plucked right from the plant.  And Oregon Berries are ripe for the pickin’.  Here are but a few of my favorites:

** Strawberry:  The fragrantly sweet juiciness and deep red color of strawberries can brighten up both the taste and aesthetics of any meal..It is no wonder they are the most popular berry fruit in the world.

** Silvan blackberry: Silvans are the first blackberry to ripen and launch the beginning of our blackberry season.

** Marion blackberry: Commonly called marionberries, these have that wild berry flavor plus they freeze beautifully, even holding their shape after being frozen. In baking they pair perfectly with cinnamon and cardamom in coffee cake and muffins. They are the world’s leading commercial blackberry and, like all of Oregon’s berries, are grown right in our backyard.

** Willamette red raspberry: These floral, aromatic raspberries have the perfect balance of tartness and acidity, no doubt the reason they are the primary raspberry grown in the Pacific Northwest.

Try this super easy, delicious, raspberry cobbler shared by the innkeeper at the Old Parkdale Inn Bed and Breakfast.  Any juicy fruit or berry can be substituted.

Preheat oven to 375

1/2 cup butter
1 cup flour
3/4 cup sugar
2 teas. baking powder
3/4 cup milk
3 cups raspberries

Melt the butter in a 9X9 baking pan.  Combine sugar, flour and baking powder.  Add milk and mix well.  Pour over melted butter.  Sprinkle with berries and bake for 35-45.  Serve warm with whipped cream.

There are many u-pick farms in Oregon and for the less adventurous, many farmers markets where you’ll find just picked fresh berries.  When visiting Oregon you’ll want to spend at least a few days.  Besides the amazing family farms you’ll enjoy the scenic back roads, wineries, and unique Bed and Breakfast.  Let Oregon’s Bountiful Harvest Begin.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the Breweries of the Hood River Valley

St Patrick’s Day in the Hood River Valley is complete with award winning Pacific Northwest Brew and Hood River Bed and Breakfasts.

Immigrants began to move into Oregon Territory in the 1840’s.  German brewer Henry Saxer arrived in 1852, tasted the clear, soft water and recognized the prime hop and grain potential.  He, along with fellow immigrant Henry Weinhard, began brewing and the rest is history.

SIP! the McMinnville Wine and Food Classic

The 24th Annual McMinnville Wine and Food Classic, know as SIP!, will be held Friday through Sunday, March 10, 11, and 12, at the Evergreen Space Museum in McMinnville.  Come enjoy great cuisine and meet the chefs, talk with winemakers about their craft and purchase by the taste, glass, or bottle.  View fine art available for purchase.  The first 1000 Attendees will receive a free wine glass on Friday

A Grape Harvest Special awaits guests at Yamhill Vineyards Bed and Breakfast in Oregon’s Willamette Valley Wine Country.  From September 10 to October 30, 2016, you can harvest 25 pounds grapes from the vineyards of Yamhill Vineyards Bed and Breakfast and make your own grape juice.  Grape varieties will vary depending on the time you book your stay: Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris or Chardonnay

After a gourmet breakfast each morning, prepared by your innkeeper, you’ll head out on a vineyard tour, harvest your grapes and head back into the kitchen to make your juice, that can be drank as it is or used for jams and jellies.

Hazelnut Festival

Hazelnut Festival in Donald, Oregon

Hazelnut Festival festivities will begin at 11:00 a.m., July 11, with:

  •  A parade which will feature young marines as well as a 17′ replica of the iconic WWII Iwo Jima flag raising.
  • Food and drink, including beer will be available for purchase and a BBQ contest is planned as well.
  • Live music on the main stage by local  artists will be sure to entertain
  • A Classic Car Cruise-In, sponsored by the local company, GK Machinery, is expected to have over 100 vehicles on display
  • Vendors and local artisans will offer unique items and a special Hazelwood Boats display will be of special interest to attenders.
  • Period actors from Champoeg State Heritage area will be mingling through the crowd and large agricultural machinery will be on display

Food Flexibility

Food Flexibility is the Norm at an Oregon Bed and Breakfast

Food Flexibility is becoming a necessity for our innkeepers when preparing meals for guests at our bed and breakfasts.  There’s discussion a plenty about food choices.  The thing about breakfasts at an Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild inn is that they will be varied, wholesome and nutritious and probably never the same from one B&B to another.

Are you ovo-lacto vegetarian?  Vegan?  Prefer no pork or beef?  Lactose intolerant?  Allergic to eggs?  To kiwi fruit?  Gluten-free?  Low-calorie?  Eat everything on your plate?   Not a problem.  But the important thing is that, when you travel and choose to stay at a member inn of the Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild,  you need to let your innkeeper know, preferably in advance, about your eating preferences and we’ll do our best to comply.

The Marionberry

The Marionberry ~ An Oregon Native

When you think about them, your mouth waters. When you eat one, the sweetness just makes you want more and when you serve them with a little oatmeal, brown sugar, and butter our guests are in heaven with dessert for breakfast.

That’s the Marionberry and it was born and raised exclusively in Oregon and is known as the “cabernet of blackberries” because of it’s rich, complex earthy flavor.  Again, the lush Willamette Valley’s spring rain and sandy soil provides the perfect medium to grow these lovely berries.  A cross between a Chehalem and Olallieberry, the marionberry or marion blackberry, created in 1945 at OSU, then released in 1956 has become the standard blackberry.  It was created to fulfill a need for a sturdy berry that could be frozen and put into processed foods and has now become the number one berry crop that is frozen then sold throughout the US and Canada.

The berry is used in pies, cobblers, crisps and can be served at any meal.

  • Using a ramekin, spray with non-stick spray, put 3/4c. frozen or fresh marionberries into the ramekin, sprinkle 2 tablespoons uncooked oatmeal over the berries, then sprinkle about 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar over the oatmeal and top with 1 tablespoon butter.
  • Bake about 20 minutes at 350 degrees or until berries are hot and butter is melted.
  • You can play with this easy recipe by adding whatever you like to the berries.  I have added hazelnuts, my homemade granola and even some cinnamon is good too.

Top the berry crisp with a dollop of fresh homemade whip cream and it’s like having dessert for breakfast.  Served up with an egg and onion scramble topped with fresh grated asiago cheese, a thick, warm, fresh from the oven square of cinnamon crumb cake, and several slices of sizzling turkey bacon it makes a simple breakfast at an Oregon Bed and Breakfast.

Oregon Hazelnuts

Red had heard that Innkeeper and Chef Kristin Fintel of Chehalem Ridge Bed and Breakfast sources ingredients for her gourmet breakfasts from local suppliers and he got to experience it for himself.

Strawberries for Chehalem RidgeFirst stop was Caravan Coffee, where Kat made him a cup of fair-trade coffee that Kristin serves in the mornings. On to the hazelnut orchards – or filbert orchards, depending on your point of view. Red learned that 99% of the US hazelnut production happens in the Willamette Valley.  No wonder Kristin uses them in her homemade granola. We stopped at the farmer’s market, where we picked up strawberries that smelled so good, Red was sad he could only hold them and not eat them. Kristin said they would be the star compote atop the next morning’s Lemon Ricotta Pancakes.

Bob himself of Bob's Red MillFinally, Red got to visit Bob’s Red Mill where they still stone-grind wheat and other grains. He went in the store where Kristin buys her gluten-free flours and, lo!, there was Bob himself! Red was excited to pose with Bob in front of the French Burr Millstone from the 1800s. Red went back to the B&B with Kristin to help prep for breakfast, but it turns out he was all legs when it came to cooking.

Although Red Chair Travels has moved on to Washington State we still have so many tales to tell of its visit to Oregon.
