Three Capes Scenic Drive

Winter Whale Watching on the Oregon Coast offers front row seats for folks to witness the yearly migration of the grey whale.

Winter Whale Watching can be observed as gray whales cruise along the Oregon coast en route from Alaska to Mexico, spouting geyser-like blasts of spray as they go. Thanks to towering coastal bluffs and a string of beaches set aside as state parks, Oregon offers visitors front-row seats for whale watching.  People come from all over the United States to learn about the gray whales that migrate past our coast each year. The Whale Watching Spoken Here program places volunteers at great whale watching sites during Watch Weeks so they can teach others while watching the whales too. If you love whales you, too, can be a volunteer!

Oregon Parks and Recreation Department park rangers are ready at the Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay to answer your questions and help you find whales to watch.  Located on U.S. 101 along the seawall in scenic Depoe Bay, the center is a perfect spot for visitors to locate and watch whales as they blow, dive, spyhop and breach.  Whale Watching Week runs December 27 through December 31 although this is not the only time. you can see the whales.  About 18,000 gray whales will pass by in about 4 weeks, from mid-December to mid-January. The same locations are still great viewing spots.

Trained volunteers at 26 “Whale Watching Spoken Here” sites help visitors spot  gray whales during the winter and spring annual migrations. The volunteers are on duty 10 a.m.-1 p.m. to help visitors see the marine animals and offer information about their migration.

Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild member inns on the Oregon Coast can be home base for your trip to the Oregon Coast to witness this yearly migration.  From Astoria to Port Orford, 16 inspected and approved bed and breakfast inns of the Oregon B&B Guild will provide the ultimate in Oregon Coast Lodging.

Holiday Lights at Oregon’s Shore Acres

Shore Acres began as a private estate with luxurious gardens featuring trees, shrubs and flowering plants brought from around the world. In 1906 Louis J. Simpson, pioneer lumberman and shipbuilder, built a beautiful home for his wife, Cassie, perched on a scenic bluff above the spectacular Oregon Coast and the Pacific Ocean.  Today it is an Oregon State Park where something is in bloom almost every day of the year.

Plan your trip so that you can spend the afternoon and early evening viewing seals, sea lions, elephant seals and other marine life from the newly built observation deck overlooking the scenic Oregon Coast at the Simpson Reef Overlook.  Bring your binoculars to scan the horizon for a glimpse of migrating whales and  shorebirds.

Then, a dusk, head into the gardens for the spectacular Holiday Light Show.  The gardens are lit with 300,000 lights, mostly LED of course, and sculpted into pelicans, puffins, jellyfish, Shore Acres’ cranes, a life-size leaping Orca whale and a spouting Gray Whale, flora and fauna, leaping frog in a pond and so much more.

We invite you to start your Oregon Coast Adventure by booking your stay at an Oregon Coast Bed and Breakfast.   Whale and storm watching, the holiday lights at Shore Acres, and an relaxing stay at an Oregon Bed and Breakfast, makes for a quiet winter getaway.
