The Red Chair arrived in Oregon about two months ago and we are still tickled pink to have it as our guest

BedandBreakfast.com has partnered with the Red Chair Travels to keep the journey alive.  The Red Chair’s story started on Cape Cod in the spring of 2012. This lucky chair has surfed the waves off Nantucket, explored the cranberry bogs of Chatham, enjoyed the view from Nobska Light in Falmouth, watched the grist mill turn at Stony Brook in Brewster and the sun set over Menemsha.  The chair has traveled all over New England, from Maine to Rhode Island all on the kindness of America’s friendly B&B’s.

At each stop, the Red Chair is introduced to all that is memorable and beautiful about the local area, with a B&B owner as the chair’s concierge. Traveling is about getting outside of the everyday and seeing the world with fresh eyes. Through the journey of the Red Chair, we are all travelers off the beaten track where true relaxation awaits.

The Red Chair has traveled to over 20 states with nearly 500 innkeepers acting as concierges.  And now the Red Chair has started its journey through Oregon and will visit more than 20 inns of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild.  Follow Red as it visits The Seven Wonders of Oregon, the Bed and Breakfasts in Oregon’s Wine Country, Mt Hood, Crater Lake and all points in between.  We know you’ll enjoy the ride and hope you are inspired to travel to the places, and inns, that Red visits.

Where to stay in Oregon

Where to Stay in Oregon?  Do you automatically think about a chain hotel or a chain motel?

McKenzie River Koosah Falls

Next week is the Annual Meeting of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild and living in Parkdale, Oregon, we have a couple of ways to get to Salem.  We are choosing the longer route for a couple of reasons: We love to Chase Waterfalls and Geocaches and document them on our Facebook page.  So we’ll head south around Mt Hood then take the McKenzie Pass Scenic Byway, Hwy 126.  These are just a few of the McKenzie River Waterfalls we hope to shoot.  If you know of any others please let me know.  We have most of the afternoon and an extra hour of daylight.

Sahalie Falls and Koosah Falls:  Two breathtaking waterfalls with foaming white water cascades in between

There are other waterfalls in the World Famous McKenzie River area and I’m not sure we’ll have time to see them all.  We’d love to hike into Tamolitch Falls (aka Blue Pool) but again, time and weather will be the deciding factor.

We invite you to discover and explore the Scenic McKenzie River area, either on foot, bike or car.  Start your journey at an Oregon Bed and Breakfast member inn on either side of this stunning drive through the Central Oregon Cascades, from Eugene or Sisters.   I hope to get some good shots and share them with you in a future post

Red Chair Travels finishes up its stay at the McKenzie River Inn, not able to see half the attractions that the World Famous McKenzie River Area has to offer.  Here it sits in the sun imagining the summer activity on the Wild and Scenic McKenzie River and the things it missed in the nearby Willamette National Forest:

  • Bike or Hike the McKenzie River Trail
  • Float the McKenzie River on a famous McKenzie River Drift Boat
  • Fly Fish with or without a guide
  • Soak at Tewrilliger Hot Spring
  • Drive the Oregon Scenic Byways ~ Hwy 126 and 242
  • Take a Horseback Ride
  • Golf Tokatee
  • Take a Row Boat out on Clear Lake
  • Visit the amazing Waterfalls
  • Road Bike Hwy 19

You can see why Red Chair would have liked to stay a few days more at the McKenzie River Inn.  But it must travel on to Oregon’s Willamette Valley where it will visit Youngberg Hills Vineyard and Inn

Red Chair Travels headed up the Rogue River Gorge for a stay at the Historic Prospect Hotel.  Built in 1888 as a stage coach stop halfway between the Rogue Valley and Crater lake, this Nationally Registered Historic Hotel has been restored for full comfort while maintaining its charm.  Being the Closest Bed and Breakfast to Crater Lake, only 28 miles away, the inn is a perfect home base while exploring Southern Oregon’s National Forests, Wilderness areas and BLM land, and the majestic Lake, of course.

From the inn you can take a stroll to the Rogue River and three lovely waterfalls and to the Avenue of the Boulders, huge boulders thrown when Mt Mazama blew up 7000 years ago.  From the Prospect Hotel head out for the day to hike, bike, raft, fish, Cross Country Ski or snow shoe.  You get the picture: plenty to do from the Prospect Hotel.

Prospect Historic Hotel Bed and Breakfast Inn provides lodging in its 10 room, each with period furnishings and decorations, private baths and beautiful quilts on every bed.  Hearty belly filling breakfasts.  Stay where Teddy Roosevelt, Jack London, Zane Grey, John Muir, William Jennings Bryan, Gifford Pinchot and Hubert Humphrey slept. Relax in the sitting parlors, warming your toes at the fireplace and catch up on some local history from our collection of books.  Unwind on the wrap around Veranda with a glass of wine or a microbrew and a good book
