RR Thompson

Red Chair Travels visit through the Willamette Valley has been just a whirlwind.  After resting up a spell at R R Thompson House the innkeepers headed out, with Red in tow, to see the sights around Carlton Oregon.

First stop was the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum home to the famous Spruce Goose and the Wings to Waves Waterpark.  Yes, Red, that is a real 747 sitting on its roof!

Red would have loved to spend more time at R R Thompson house if only to enjoy the bountiful, gourmet breakfast included it its stay.  But it is a chair after all and choose to simply relax in the sunshine on the deck and lawn, taking in the beauty of the lush grounds surrounding the inn before heading off to explore other inns of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild and the Willamette Valley.

BedandBreakfast.com has partnered with Red Chair Travels keeping the journey alive and now the inns of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild will do our part .  We know you’ll enjoy the ride and hope you’re inspired to travel to the places, and inns, that Red will visit.

Carlton House Bed and Breakfast

Thank you Carlton Inn Bed and Breakfast for hosting Red Chair Travels. I think its favorite time at the inn was time spent with the hens. They were very impressed with their famous visitor.   Their farm fresh eggs will make their way into gourmet breakfasts at the inn including this:

Lemon Ricotta Pancakes
1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3 Tablespoons granulated
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese (do not substitute fat-free)
1 large egg
2 large egg whites
1/2 cup lemon juice
2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
1 Tablespoon canola oil, more for brushing on the griddle/skillet

Preheat oven to 200 degrees.  In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.  In a medium bowl, whisk together ricotta, egg, egg whites, lemon juice, lemon zest and canola oil.  Fold this mixture into the dry ingredients to make a thick batter.  Brush a nonstick skillet with canola oil and heat over medium-low.  With a 1/4 cup measure, drop the batter onto the skillet, spreading it slightly. Cook the pancakes until browned on the underside and beginning to set, about 2 minutes.  Flip and cook until browned on the second side and cooked at the center, about two minutes longer. Transfer the cooked pancakes to a baking sheet and place in the oven to keep warm.  Brush the griddle or skillet with the remaining oil and repeat with remaining batter.

Blueberry Sauce
1-1/2 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons cornstarch
2-1/4 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
1/3 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon salt

In a small bowl, combine the lemon juice and cornstarch, then set aside. In a medium saucepan, combine the blueberries, sugar, water and salt.  Bring mixture to a boil over high heat.  Reduce to a simmer and stir in lemon juice-cornstarch mixture.  Simmer, stirring, until the sauce thickens slightly, about 2 minutes more.  Cover and set aside.

The Red Chair arrived in Oregon about two months ago and we are still tickled pink to have it as our guest

BedandBreakfast.com has partnered with the Red Chair Travels to keep the journey alive.  The Red Chair’s story started on Cape Cod in the spring of 2012. This lucky chair has surfed the waves off Nantucket, explored the cranberry bogs of Chatham, enjoyed the view from Nobska Light in Falmouth, watched the grist mill turn at Stony Brook in Brewster and the sun set over Menemsha.  The chair has traveled all over New England, from Maine to Rhode Island all on the kindness of America’s friendly B&B’s.

At each stop, the Red Chair is introduced to all that is memorable and beautiful about the local area, with a B&B owner as the chair’s concierge. Traveling is about getting outside of the everyday and seeing the world with fresh eyes. Through the journey of the Red Chair, we are all travelers off the beaten track where true relaxation awaits.

The Red Chair has traveled to over 20 states with nearly 500 innkeepers acting as concierges.  And now the Red Chair has started its journey through Oregon and will visit more than 20 inns of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild.  Follow Red as it visits The Seven Wonders of Oregon, the Bed and Breakfasts in Oregon’s Wine Country, Mt Hood, Crater Lake and all points in between.  We know you’ll enjoy the ride and hope you are inspired to travel to the places, and inns, that Red visits.

Red Chair Travels takes a trip to the Farm

Red Chair Travels learned about  the history of Tillamook which began in 1909 and as a fascinating tale of nineteenth century European immigrants making their way to the Oregon coast in search of cheap inhabitable land not already taken by folks coming through on the Oregon Trail.

The innkeepers of Sandlake Country Inn put on their concierge’s caps and took Red Chair to one of Tillamook’s cooperative dairies.  Many of the nearly 100 farm families have been farming in Tillamook County for generations and take great pride in producing very high quality dairy products

Red Chair got to meet some of the cows feasting on the lush green grass and then the heifers in the 100 year old barn.  After a long day exploring the farm and the Oregon coast it was back to the Inn for some R&R.

The Sandlake Country Inn is 10 minutes north of Pacific City and just minutes from Pacific Ocean beaches.  This historical landmark B&B has 3 spacious rooms and a romantic stand alone cottage.  Gourmet breakfasts are delivered to your door for ultimate privacy.  Service and attention to detail are provided along with the privacy you’re looking for.

After you’ve selected the very best in Oregon Coast Lodging you’ll want to visit Tillamook Cheese, watch cheesemakers and packaging staff at work. Hear about the history and the cheesemaking process. Smell the delicious aroma of freshly baked waffle cones. And best of all, taste the award-winning cheeses, nearly 40 flavors of ice cream.

Red Chair Travels finishes up its stay at the McKenzie River Inn, not able to see half the attractions that the World Famous McKenzie River Area has to offer.  Here it sits in the sun imagining the summer activity on the Wild and Scenic McKenzie River and the things it missed in the nearby Willamette National Forest:

  • Bike or Hike the McKenzie River Trail
  • Float the McKenzie River on a famous McKenzie River Drift Boat
  • Fly Fish with or without a guide
  • Soak at Tewrilliger Hot Spring
  • Drive the Oregon Scenic Byways ~ Hwy 126 and 242
  • Take a Horseback Ride
  • Golf Tokatee
  • Take a Row Boat out on Clear Lake
  • Visit the amazing Waterfalls
  • Road Bike Hwy 19

You can see why Red Chair would have liked to stay a few days more at the McKenzie River Inn.  But it must travel on to Oregon’s Willamette Valley where it will visit Youngberg Hills Vineyard and Inn
