A short drive from the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Fossil, Oregon is a small town with great access to water-based recreation on the Columbia River and John Day River.

The John Day River is a popular destination for steelhead and bass fishing, as well as for whitewater rafting.

The Fossil Beds National Monument is known worldwide for its remarkably complete preservation of millions of years of plant and animal life. Real research is still being done here by scientists, but you can follow trails into the badlands, and examine fossils at the visitors center.

Be sure to check out the town's new woolly mammoth sculpture.
