McKenzie River Waterfalls and The Blue Pool

Sahalie Falls, is the first and tallest of three waterfalls on the roaring McKenzie River. ‘The falls plunge a sheer 73 feet over an overhanging exposure of basalt into a huge basin which captures the mist ejected from the falls and turns it into a hurricane directed straight at the viewpoints for the falls just downstream’. Sahalie is a Chinook jargon word meaning “high”.

Koosah Falls is the second of the three major waterfalls of the McKenzie River and is just one mile downstream from Sahalie Falls. The word Koosah is a Chinook word meaning “sky”. These falls were formed 3,000 years ago when lava flows formed the McKenzie River.

Tamolitch Falls is the third and final of the three major waterfalls found along the McKenzie River. Unlike its upstream siblings Sahalie and Koosah Falls, Tamolitch Falls is anything but consistent. The falls are partially de-watered by the natural behavior of the McKenzie River upstream of the falls.

Can you swim in Tamolitch Blue Pool?

Tamolitch Falls and the Blue Pool

Yes, you can swim in the Blue Pool, but there are some important safety considerations to be made. Foremost: the pool is cold, nearly freezing in fact, at 37 degrees! At that temperature, it’s possible to become hypothermic in just 10 minutes.

We invite you to discover and explore the Scenic McKenzie River area, either on foot, bike or car. The McKenzie River Scenic rides/drives can be taking in your car or on your bike or maybe both. Either way there is an Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild member inn where you can rest your tired bones.

In the Willamette Valley you can spend your entire day doing nothing. Relax on a comfortable front porch at one of 13 bed and breakfasts or in their gardens. Or head out on a day trip to hike parts of the Sahalie and Koosah Falls trail to these falls

Our Chasing Waterfalls and Oregon Waterfall Wednesdays series continues. According to Northwest Waterfall Survey there are well over 1000 waterfalls in Oregon! We’ve set out to witness the beauty of as many as we can. We’ll share our finds with you, our guests, so you too can set out to Chase Waterfalls.
