Shellburg Falls – a Marion County Waterfall

Shellburg Falls is the crown jewel of a narrow stretch of the Santiam State Forest tucked into the Stout Creek canyon. Here, the creek drops nearly 100 feet over a jutting basalt ledge, carving out a deep, cave-like recess behind the curtain of water, a feature surprisingly common among waterfalls in the Central Oregon Cascades. The trail slips behind the falls, offering a unique perspective, before climbing up to the canyon rim. Fed entirely by rainfall, Shellburg Creek diminishes to a gentle flow in summer, though it rarely appears to run completely dry.
