Head into the North Eastern corner of Oregon and the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve. The Prairie is situated in the Wallowa River Valley northeast of Joseph and the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast.
At 33,000 acres, the Zumwalt Prairie is North America’s largest remaining grassland of its type and you are welcome to enjoy the beautiful views of the prairie and canyons. Visit in the spring for an explosion of wildflowers.
Supporting one of the highest concentrations of breeding hawks and eagles in North America, the Zumwalt Prairie is also home to falcons making this a haven for birds of prey and 17 species of grassland songbirds. Many large mammals in the Prairie include elk, mule deer, big horn sheep and bobcats.
The best time to visit the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve is from late May through June into early July for peak wildflower displays, featuring lupine, geraniums, and buckwheat, and to see numerous raptors like hawks and eagles. For a different experience, consider winter for cross-country skiing or fall for fall colors, but spring/early summer offers the most vibrant floral and wildlife viewing.

As of June 1, 2026, the Oregon Association of Independent (formerly the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild – OBBG) discontinued the program, and gift certificates are no longer available for sale. However, existing gift certificates remain valid and may still be redeemed.
