Willamette Valley Truffle Trail

It’s officially Oregon Truffle Month! The state of Oregon decreed February as Truffle Month, the best time of year for Oregon truffles.

  • Oregon is recognized as one of the top five truffle regions in the world, and Oregon truffles are among the world’s preeminent culinary delicacies
  • Truffles are a form of mycorrhizal fungus that develops underground in symbiotic association with the roots of trees, and truffles are the “fruit” of these fungi
  • Oregon is home to four native truffle species that are recognized for their culinary value: the Oregon Winter White Truffle (Tuber oregonense), the Oregon Spring White Truffle (Tuber gibbosum), the Oregon Black Truffle (Leucangium cascadiense) and the Oregon Brown Truffle (Kalapuya brunnea)
  • Oregon truffles provide an economic incentive to keep forests standing, delivering ecosystem services including carbon sequestration, wildlife migration corridors and many other benefits to the natural and aesthetic environment, while ensuring sustainable annual income for landowners.
  • Whereas February marks the peak of Oregon truffle season, drawing thousands of people from around the country and the world, who

Newberg and Dundee embrace Oregon wild truffle season with a plethora of opportunities to indulge from February through March, 2025.

  • Newberg, nestled in the heart of wine country, features shopping, lodging, restaurants, services, entertainment and events
  • Dundee, Oregon is nestled in the Red Hills of the Willamette Valley. The bed and breakfasts of these two quaint towns welcome you with casual elegance and small-town hospitality to create an unforgettable experience. Wake up in Oregon Wine Country and a Taste of Truffle.

INTRODUCING THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY TRUFFLE TRAIL

The Willamette Valley is fertile ground for wild truffle mushrooms, which ripen throughout the winter. Alongside the bounty of the region’s most famous fruit and wine grapes, this season is one of the most delicious times to travel to the area. Building on Truffle Month, the month of February, Newberg and Dundee partnered to present the Truffle Trail, which includes lodging packages, decadent meals, wine pairings, and of course foraging excursions, all centered around the elusive truffle mushroom.

More Stops on the Truffle Trail: Restaurants, cafes and wineries in Newberg, Dundee and surrounding areas in the Willamette Valley will feature truffles on their menus throughout truffle season. One that caught my eye: Wooden Heart Kitchen, the newly opened bistro in downtown Dundee, will feature an Oregon Truffle Pizza (olive oil, mozzarella, celery root, crispy cauliflower, camembert cheese, chives, shaved Oregon truffles) and a Truffle Ice Cream Sandwich.  A complete list of participating restaurants will be updated at Taste Newberg Truffle Trail.

Book a Truffle Tour

Love the idea of foraging but don’t know how or where to start? The best way is to go with an expert guide, and Black Tie Tours is one of the only tours of its kind in Oregon. Trained truffle dogs lead the group to find the elusive mushrooms, followed by a meal on-site where you’ll taste them for yourself. The Rustic Truffle Tromp includes a truffle hunt through a more rugged forest, ending with a casual meal of soup, sandwiches, cheese, and charcuterie. The Bougie Truffle Tromp takes an upscale turn, with a chef-prepared lunch co-hosted by a guest Willamette Valley Winemaker pouring their wines.
