Oregon Heritage Tree

Oregon Heritage Trees – Trees that Tell an Historic Story

What does it take for a tree to be recognized as an Oregon Heritage Tree?

Oregon Heritage Trees‘Honored groves, single trees or groups of trees have something in common with one another no matter what the species: they are trees that tell a story; trees that confound and astound; trees that educate both Oregonians and visitors about significant people or events from the past; trees that have survived natural disasters or stand as silent sentries to the passage of time. And that’s only a small part of what makes an Oregon Heritage Tree compelling.’

We spent the last couple of days exploring around Eugene, Oregon: chasing waterfalls, geocaches, covered bridges and Oregon Heritage Trees. We are aware of the need to travel to destinations that make it easy to maintain social distancing practices. Here in Oregon we’ve got your social distance travel needs covered.

Owen Cherry – 174 years in Eugene Oregon

Folklore is the Owen Cherry tree, pictured above, was planted in 1847 by Eugene Skinner, co-founder of the City of Eugene in 1853. By 1950 the site of the tree was owned by George Owen, a former Eugene City Councilor, lumberman, and philanthropist. Mr. Owen donated the site to the city. The Owen Rose Garden has more than 4,500 roses of over 400 varieties. The magnificent Owen Cherry was in spectacular spring bloom when we visited this past week.

Ellmaker Grove – Ellmaker Oak, Maple Row and Incense Cedar

The trees that make up the Ellmaker Grove include the 300-400 year old Ellmaker Oak and numerous large big leaf maples that were planted by the Ellmmaker family. Of particular historical significance was the proximity of the Ellmaker Ranch to the Applegate Trail. The Ellmakers planted a row of maple trees, which they called “Maple Row” leading from the wide Applegate Trail to their smithy.

MaMere's Guest House

Meet the innkeepers – sister and brother duo Emily and Eli keep things going at MaMere’s Guest House in Monmouth Oregon.

‘MaMere’s Guest House is located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. As brother and sister we are 10 years apart in age and miles MaMere's Guest House in personality. Eli likes to sleep in and stay up late. Emily goes to bed early and rises to early morning chatter of her young offspring. Eli is musically talented. Emily can’t carry a tune. Emily is a talker, while Eli tends to be the strong silent type (especially early in the morning). But despite our differences, we complement each other and have a lot of fun working together!

‘Our parents, Bill & Sarah, were super supportive of Emily’s passion and in what seemed like a blink of eye, the stars aligned and our parents decided to buy the charming B&B in August of 2016. Giving Emily the opportunity to turn her “what if” into a “why not?”.

‘Our family has owned MaMere’s Guest House for 4.5 years and have met so many wonderful people during that time. We are ramping up for a busy and active 2021 and hope to meet you in person soon!’

MaMere’s Guest House is located in the heart of wine county, and is the perfect place to call home while you explore the surrounding wineries or visiting Western Oregon University. The property is on the National Register of Historic Places and is only a block from WOU and Monmouth’s Main Street.

Oregon Bird Watching

Oregon Bird Watching in the Willamette Valley

There is an amazing wildlife show at these three Oregon wildlife refuges. Oregon Bird Watching is amazing. Especially this time of year when activity along the major flyways increase.

The Oregon Cascades Birding Trail (OCBT) is a great place to begin your birding adventure. From there you can decide where you’d like to visit. When you have made that decision turn to the website for the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild and I am sure you will find an inn close by.

The Willamette Valley is known for its unique Bed and Breakfasts, fertile land with orchards, vineyards and rolling grass fields.  Nestled between the snow-capped volcanic peaks of the Cascade Mountains and the forests of the Coast Range it’s no wonder the valley offers an abundance of birds and bird habitats and the Willamette Valley Birding Trail will take you there.

Willamette Valley National Wildlife Complex provides protection for historically abundant oak savanna, native prairie, riparian forest and wetland habitats. In these three protected places, endangered plant populations grow, summer songbirds nest, and wintering waterfowl find sanctuary in vast wetlands.

A hungry flock of Canada Geese soar high and then land to munch the grass across deep lush pastures at the Baskett Slough Wildlife Refuge near Dallas, Oregon. They arrive at Baskett Slough from far off arctic nesting grounds and have come to this U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service refuge for the habitat.

Located near the confluence of the Willamette and Santiam Rivers, Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1965, the refuge provides wetlands and riparian woodland sanctuary for migratory and resident wildlife which range from the tiny Pacific chorus frog to the black-tailed deer.

Established in 1964, the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge’s primary management goal is to provide wintering habitat for dusky Canada geese. Driving through the 5,325 acres of the refuge and the 341 acres of its Snag Boat Bend Unit, is like taking a step back into the natural history of the Willamette Valley.

The State of Oregon is a bird watcher’s paradise. There are extensive reserves and habitats that serve as excellent nesting and brood rearing areas for waterfowl and colonial nesting birds including American white pelican and several heron species. Many of our Member Inns have habitats on their grounds or are located near land ideal for birding. Grab your binoculars, choose an inn, and set out on your bird watching adventure.

'Wine Country Foodie'

‘Wine Country Foodie’, the new La Bastide Bed and Breakfast Youtube Channel. 2021 is shaping up to look quite different in Oregon Wine Country, but we think you’ll be pleased by what you find.

Local wineries are continuing to rake in accolades for being among the top wines in the world – Four Graces, Bergstrom, and ROCO, for example, all landed spots on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of the World. Several new tasting rooms and wineries have opened nearby, Twomey, Knudsen Vineyards, and Bergstrom, among others, and in addition to the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay options, many wineries are now offering an estate sparkling wine.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t give a shout out to the amazing chefs at places such as Rosmarino, The Painted Lady, or The Joel Palmer House, all still working their magic pairing Willamette Valley wines to create magical dining memories.

As for the fine people at La Bastide Bed and Breakfast, their world is looking different too. Their menu has expanded so as to enchant a wider array of preferences and appetites. You’ll still find Dutch Baby Pancakes or Smoked Salmon Quiche rotating onto the menu, but you can also order our fresh cinnamon scones or an amazing breakfast sandwich made with house made bread. In-room dining, dining on our back patio, or “to go” dining are all popular options. Also, they now have Mimosas!

Your hosts, Elizabeth and Mark just finished producing their first 6-episode series on their Youtube Channel “Wine Country Foodie”. The channel focuses on sharing ‘our favorite recipes with our guests and the world.’ Watch episode 1, ‘Apple and Berry Dutch Baby Pancakes’, and subscribe so as not miss their next 5 episode, to be released roughly every week or two.

La Bastide Bed and Breakfast

La Bastide Bed and Breakfast in Oregon’s Wine Country

La Bastide Bed and Breakfast is located in Dundee, Oregon, within 2 miles of more than 25 wineries and tasting rooms in the Willamette Valley. You’ll appreciate both the privacy of a modern estate and charm of a country inn.

La Bastide Innkeepers Mark and Elizabeth built La Bastide Bed & Breakfast in 2014 with the goal of creating a special place to enjoy great food and great service in the heart of Oregon wine country. The name “bastide” refers to a country house in France and La Bastide reflects a French influence that is part of both the innkeepers style as well as the style of the wines made in the Dundee hills.

The inn offers 7 charming guest rooms, all with queen sized beds, private bathrooms, fireplace and vineyard views. The perfect place for a romantic getaway or to relax after a day exploring the Dundee Hills AVA. An elegant two course gourmet breakfast is made and served from scratch each morning. The fruit course may be something like fresh local Oregon berries with yogurt and house made granola, poached pears with raspberry sauce, or broiled grapefruit with coconut. A hot entree will follow, such as poached eggs on toast, oven pancake with seasonal fruit sauce, or smoked salmon egg scramble.

La Bastide strives to create a comfortable, relaxing and memorable experience and the innkeepers are always happy to recommend local restaurants and activities.

“Highly recommend! We had a wonderful time at La Bastida B&B, the property is great, great rooms, and very clean. And the breakfast was amazing!” a Tripadvisor contributor

National Small Business Week 2021

A Gift of Relaxation through the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild

A Gift of Relaxation is the perfect gift for any occasion, any time of year. Rest and Relaxation in the form of a stocking stuffer? A wedding gift for the newly married? A graduation present? Employee holiday gifts? A much needed reprieve from the months of lockdown we’ve all endured? No two inns of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild are alike. One thing we all have in common: we are small, owner/manager operated, independent lodging properties. When you stay with us, or purchase a Gift Certificate, you are making a difference by supporting our businesses and our community.

Guests at Thyme and Tide Bed and Breakfast on the Oregon Coast recently used 6 gift Lodging Gift Vouchers for a two nights stay. Susan and Duane from Eugene receive the gift of relaxation every Christmas from their kids. This last year the kids asked them if they’d prefer something else and they replied, “no, we like the gift cards best.”

Duane and Susan chatted about their long history of enjoying Oregon B&B’s and using the OBBG Lodging Gift Vouchers. They prefer B&B’s when they travel and Duane even Inn-sat for a 7 room B&B, single handedly, long ago when the full time Innkeepers went on vacation.

They arrived in masks and social distancing due to Covid and were quickly able to relax at Thyme and Tide, confident that all safety protocols were being observed. The Three Capes Scenic Drive led them to Oceanside and Thyme and Tide where they had a sunny day to explore the Oceanside tunnel to Short Beach. Dungeness crab is abundant right now. They feasted on crab quiche, made with locally caught crab, veggies on the side and fresh cinnamon buns the first morning. The second day they requested Bacon and Eggs with English muffins and avocado. A warm berry crisp rounded out their breakfast.

With Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild Lodging Gift Vouchers you’ll give the gift of relaxation, time away from the everyday, the opportunity to gain a clear head. They are available in $25 increments and can be redeemed at every Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild member across the state. With over 25 members to choose among, that’s a lot of choice.

And the recipient can decide where and when to use them. Maybe they’d like to walk in the sand on the Oregon Coast?  Hike along the rim of Crater Lake? Catch a new museum exhibit in Portland? Sample a pinot noir in the Oregon Wine Country? It’s not just about the lodging. It’s about time. And if you’ve been on the receiving end here’s your chance to pay it forward.

You can purchase Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild Lodging Gift Vouchers online, choose the amount and where you’d like them delivered.  We’ll send them by mail with delivery confirmation.

It’s that simple. Not much of your time, but a generous gift of time for your recipient. What are you waiting for? Support a local, independently owned, small Oregon business. We thank you in advance.
